The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Edwin C. Johnson (MCSN: 353034), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Commander of a Tank in Tank Company, Twenty-second Marines (Reinforced), First Provisional Marine Brigade, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, in July 1944. Going to the assistance of his Platoon Leader whose tank had been disabled on 21 July, Sergeant Johnson courageously maneuvered his own vehicle to provide covering fire for the stranded crew and, although subjected to intense enemy fire which killed his Platoon Leader, coolly continued his rescue efforts and succeeded in removing the remainder of the men from the disabled tank. After his Platoon Sergeant was wounded on 24 July, he took command of the platoon and directed its operations with great skill for the remainder of the Campaign. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
