The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class David B. Johnson (MCSN: 965161), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Runner, serving with Company A, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 10 May 1945. Braving deadly enemy machine-gun and rifle fire during an assault on heavily defended Dakeshi Ridge, Private First Class Johnson rushed from his sheltered position and daringly carried a wounded comrade across a dangerous, exposed area to safety. Again, without hesitation, he crossed the open area to rescue another wounded Marine and, after administering first aid, carried him across the rough terrain. By his heroic efforts, he prevented the capture by enemy forces of two comrades and was instrumental in saving their lives. His initiative and cool courage were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
