The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Lacy John, Jr. (MCSN: 307800), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Leader of a Machine Gun Squad while serving with the First Battalion, Twenty-Fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on the Island of Tinian in the Marianas, on 25 July 1944. Vigilant and aggressive while holding a vital position on the ridge overlooking the beach area, Corporal John personally manned his machine gun when the exposed left flank of his unit was attacked and forced back by a terrific enemy barrage and, pouring a steady stream of devastating fire on the advancing enemy, effectively covered the withdrawal of his men. Subsequently attempting to rejoin his unit, he was fatally wounded by a savage burst of fire from Japanese guns before gaining his objective. An indomitable fighter, Corporal John, by his intrepid initiative, resolute fortitude and cool courage in the face of savage opposition, contributed essentially to the ultimate conquest of this vital Japanese stronghold, and his unwavering devotion to duty throughout a period of fierce hostilities upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
