The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Edward V. Jensen (MCSN: 446871), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Telephone Operator of the Third Battalion, Tenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Tinian, Mariana Islands, 27 July 1944. Attached to an artillery forward observation party, Private First Class Jensen climbed a radio tower in the face of heavy small-arms fire in order to maintain communications between the observer and the artillery battalion and, remaining there for a period of approximately one and one-half hours, enabled his battalion to direct effective artillery fire upon the enemy. His courage, perseverance and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
