The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Charles E. Jensen (MCSN: 361395), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Crew Chief of the Second Amphibian Tractor Battalion, Fleet Marine Force, in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Gilbert and Mariana Islands from 20 November 1943 to 16 June 1944. Fighting with aggressive determination during the initial landing on Saipan, Corporal Jensen immediately made his tractor available for transporting reserve troops and vital supplies to the beach, repeatedly directing his vehicle to advanced areas over extremely hazardous terrain and in the face of withering enemy gun fire. By his capable skill in the evacuation of casualties, Corporal Jensen was instrumental in saving numerous lives, giving unstintingly of his time and efforts until he fell, mortally wounded. His cool courage, skilled judgment and efficient direction of his crew were contributing factors in the ultimate success of our mission in this strategically important island and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
