The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Assistant Cook Alfred P. Jensen, Jr. (MCSN: 261709), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with a battery of the Third Battalion, Tenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, during operations against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 7 July 1944. With his battery position under attack by the enemy, Assistant Cook Jensen remained steadfast at his post and continued to fire his gun until his ammunition was expended and then, locating an abandoned machine gun in the area, promptly set it up and directed devastating fire against hostile emplacements despite the enemy’s intense return fire. By his daring initiative, courage and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of grave personal danger, Assistant Cook Jensen contributed to the success of our operations against the Japanese, and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
