Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific: Serial 6887

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant James L. Jennings (MCSN: 406183), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company L, Third Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 25 June 1944. After two unsuccessful attempts had been made to reach a patrol which had been fired upon suddenly by the enemy, wounding one of the members and cutting off the remainder from the company, Sergeant Jennings volunteered to make his way through the intense hostile fire, lead the patrol back to his company and permit the delivery of mortar and artillery fire on the Japanese. Successfully accomplishing his mission, he led the patrol back without casualty and made it possible for the wounded men to be evacuated. His courage, initiative and zealous devotion to duty throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
