The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant Edwin R. Jennings (MCSN: 2800852), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company A, First Battalion, Twenty-first Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, 9 August 1944. With his company pinned down by flanking hostile machine-gun fire while attacking along a jungle trail, Platoon Sergeant Jennings voluntarily led a patrol to silence the hostile weapons. Halting his patrol upon nearing the enemy, he advanced alone to locate the Japanese positions and discovered and killed two of the gunners. Although painfully wounded by the return fire of the enemy, he made his way back to his men and, leading them forward, annihilated the Japanese, thereby enabling his company to continue the attack. His courage under fire, skilled leadership and devotion to the completion of his mission reflect great credit on Platoon Sergeant Jennings and the United States Naval Service.
