The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant Charles H. Jenkins (MCSN: 267109), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company F, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during combat against enemy Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands Area on the morning of 26 October 1942. With utter disregard for his own personal safety, Platoon Sergeant Jenkins with others of his regiment, bravely attempted to hold his position against persistent enemy fire. When the Japanese finally penetrated our lines, Platoon Sergeant Jenkins, on his own initiative, immediately commanded available men and dauntlessly faced the charging enemy until all his comrades were killed or wounded. Although suffering from a wound in his thigh, he continued to battle the hostile forces in a desperate effort to hold his position until he was again injured and evacuated to the rear. His leadership, courage, and indomitable fighting spirit were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
