    Commander 7th Fleet: Serial 0954 (September 23, 1944)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant George Janiszewski (MCSN: 282754), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as section leader of a self-propelled 75-mm. gun serving with the Third Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Cape Gloucester, New Britain, on January 3-4, 1944. When his battalion was held up by enemy rifle, machine-gun and mortar fire from strongly fortified hostile positions during an attempt to force a river crossing, Sergeant Janiszewski courageously controlled and directed his section through dense jungle terrain, bringing the gun to a position from which it was fired at point-blank range, destroying enemy emplacements and guns and enabling the Third Battalion to advance. Sergeant Janiszewski’s daring aggressiveness and inspiring courage under fire were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
