The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Charles E. James (MCSN: 0-12158), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of Company B, First Battalion, Fourth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 23 May 1945. Braving intense hostile artillery, mortar and small-arms fire, First Lieutenant James led a determined attack against Japanese forces which were defending the Asato River and, repulsing the enemy, successfully crossed the river and established a beachhead to the south. By his bold execution of this attack, he contributed materially to breaking the enemy defensive line anchored at Naha. His sound tactical judgment, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
