The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant James P. Jacobson (MCSN: 0-8397), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached to the Second Marine Raider Battalion in combat against enemy Japanese forces on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, between 10 November and 4 December 1942. On the latter date, after repeated operations against the enemy, First Lieutenant Jacobson skillfully led his platoon in a bold movement against the flank and rear of a Japanese patrol which lay in ambush. With grim determination and conspicuous bravery he neutralized the enemy fire and destroyed the remnants of the hostile force, contributing in a large measure to the success of his mission. His heroic conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
