The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Robert C. Jackson (MCSN: 0-26267), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Pilot of an Observation Plane in Marine Observation Squadron THREE (VMO-3) in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 11 May 1945. Carrying out an observation mission, First Lieutenant Jackson flew his completely vulnerable aircraft into an area from which concentrated antiaircraft fire had previously been directed at him. Searching for enemy suicide landing craft in caves along the shore line, he flew at an altitude of fifty feet through continuous hostile rifle and machine-gun fire and, although wounded in the side and back, traversed the target until a complete set of photographs could be taken. By his skillful airmanship and courage, First Lieutenant Jackson obtained information of utmost importance to the conduct of the campaign against the Japanese, and his devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
