The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Edwin C. Isenhour (MCSN: 874477), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Acting Leader of a Machine-Gun Section of Company D, Second Battalion, Twenty-sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 10 March 1945. When fire from a hostile pillbox held up the advance of his company, Private First Class Isenhour courageously ran to a tank and, volunteering to designate the enemy target to the Tank Commander by means of tracer ammunition from his machine gun, continued to direct the fire of the tank despite wounds sustained during the action. Although wounded a second time, he remained on the field until he could impart his information to the next senior man in his section thereby contributing materially to the final destruction of the pillbox. His indomitable fighting spirit, fortitude and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
