The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Herbert E. Ing, Jr. (MCSN: 0-18757), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Executive Officer of Company L, Third Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, from 19 February to 16 March 1945. Immediately following the landing of his company First Lieutenant Ing braved heavy enemy mortar and rocket fire to locate and lead into position men who had become separated from his company. Subsequently taking command of the company after the Commanding Officer became Battalion Executive Officer, he led it into action and, when the advance was halted by intense enemy machine-gun and sniper fire, reconnoitered the forward area and located a heavily fortified pillbox. Procuring a tank, he braved the hostile fire to lead the vehicle into a position from which the enemy strong point could be destroyed. During an attack later in the operation, he located a series of entrenched enemy machine guns which were inflicting casualties upon all units attempting to advance and, in the face of heavy fire, directed a tank into position to destroy the enemy guns, thereby allowing the advance to continue. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon First Lieutenant Ing and the United States Naval Service.
