The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Gunnery Sergeant Clayton W. Hutton (MCSN: 269049), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with the Second Marine Raider Battalion during operations against enemy Japanese forces on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands between 4 and 22 November 1942. During a fierce engagement with a numerically superior Japanese force at Binu, Gunnery Sergeant Hutton, seeing several wounded comrades stranded between the firing lines, voluntarily and with utter disregard for his own personal safety, made his way directly in the face of heavy mortar and 20-mm. gun fire and evacuated the helpless and injured men. By his personal valor, above and beyond the call of duty, he saved the lives of several men who otherwise might have been killed.
