The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel Robert G. Hunt (MCSN: 0-3888), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of the Third Battalion, Second Marines, Reinforced, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands on 8 October 1942. With complete disregard for his own safety Lieutenant Colonel Hunt personally directed the extreme hazardous operations of his leading company in forcing a crossing of the upper Matanikau River. By his excellent judgment and outstanding professional skill he was able to effect the crossing, thereby opening the way for subsequent forces and assuring the ultimate defeat of the enemy in that region. The dauntless courage and splendid leadership displayed by Lieutenant Colonel Hunt throughout the entire engagement were an inspiration to the members of his command and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
