The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class George A. Hunt (MCSN: 956789), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Radioman of the Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands on 21 May 1945. Realizing the importance of establishing wire communication to a company observation post, Private First Class Hunt voluntarily exposed himself to withering enemy machine gun and rifle fire in order to install the telephone line. Although the hostile fire became so intense that he was forced to lay down a smoke barrage to protect his movements he courageously persevered in his mission until it was completed. By his outstanding bravery and skill under fire, Private First Class Hunt contributed materially to the success of the company. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
