The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Calvin R. Humphrey (MCSN: 929516), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Squad Leader of Company A, First Battalion, Twenty-seventh Marines, FIFTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 7 March 1945. When his squad was hit by heavy hostile cross fire from caves and several men were wounded, Private First Class Humphrey moved forward, located one cave and single handedly engaged the enemy in a fire fight. Throwing grenades and firing into the cave, he destroyed at least one of the enemy and succeeded in holding off the others until the wounded members of his squad were removed to safety. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Humphrey and the Unites States Naval Service.
