The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Andy Huff (MCSN: 561254), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Member of Company F, Second Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division I action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands on 21 May 1945. Discovering an enemy emplacement which was delivering heavy automatic and small arms fire on our forces, Private Huff boldly attacked the position with hand grenades and his machine gun. When the enemy abandoned their position, he pursued them into a cave and killed seven of the enemy. In addition, he captured their light machine gun, returning with it to his own lines. His relentless fighting spirit and courage under fire were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
