The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Charles P. Howard (MCSN: 284496), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company G, Second Battalion, Twenty-second Marines (Reinforced), First Provisional Marine Brigade in action against enemy Japanese forces on Engebi Island, Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands on 19 February 1944. Aware of the danger of leaving his foxhole after dark, Sergeant Howard crawled through Japanese infiltrated territory to administer first aid to a wounded comrade.
