The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Third Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Fourth Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Air Corps) Walter Edwin Starck (ASN: 0-667113), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a P-51 Fighter Pilot of the 487th Fighter Squadron, 352d Fighter Group, EIGHTH Air Force, while leading a flight of four P-51 type aircraft on a strafing mission near Merseburg, Germany, on 27 November 1944. During an engagement with a superior number of enemy fighters, Major Starck displayed outstanding professional skill and aggressiveness in the destruction of three enemy aircraft. His courageous leadership and determination to destroy the hostile force despite tremendous odds, reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
