The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Thomas L. Holder (MCSN: 288506), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company M, Third Battalion, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands on 20 November 1943. Fearlessly braving the enemy’s shattering machine gun and mortar fire during the fierce hostilities on D-Day, Sergeant Holder succeeded in gaining the top of a friendly tank and beat upon the turret with the butt of his rifle until the crew opened the hatch to admit him. Although wounded by shrapnel during the bitter action he fought on gallantly, directing the tank’s 75-mm. fire against hostile machine gun and another boat gun positions which contributed to the elimination of many hostile strongpoints and to the eventual success of the operation. By his daring initiative, dauntless perseverance and cool courage in the face of grave danger, Sergeant Holder served as an inspiration to others in the area and his zealous devotion to duty throughout reflects the highest credit upon the United States Naval Service.
