The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Perry W. Hibbert, Jr. (MCSN: 371493), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Tank Commander of Company A, First Tank Battalion, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands on 11 May 1945. When another tank was disabled by a hostile anti-tank gun and blocked the only tank route to the front lines, Sergeant Hibbert dismounted from his tank despite heavy enemy artillery and mortar fire and, attaching a tow cable to the disabled vehicle, had it pulled to a position clear of the road. Returning to his tank, he proceeded forward and, observing another disabled tank blocking the road, again dismounted but was seriously wounded in the head by enemy mortar shell fragments while maneuvering into position to tow the vehicle. By his courageous efforts, Sergeant Hibbert served as an inspiration to his men who completed clearing the only tank approach to the front lines, and his devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
