The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Carroll A. Herzberg (MCSN: 275858), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Leader of a Machine Gun Squad of Company B, First Battalion, Twenty-first Marines, THIRD Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands on 25 and 26 July 1944. During a fierce Japanese attack when all the flanking riflemen were either killed or wounded, Corporal Herzberg kept his machine gun squad in position and continued to fire at the attacking forces, manning the gun himself when his gunner was wounded and rendering aid to the disabled man whenever the situation permitted. Subsequently wounded in both legs by grenade fragments and bayoneted as he lay helpless in the foxhole, he remained undiscovered until his battalion counter attacked the next morning and found enemy dead scattered over the area covered by his machine gun fire. His courage, fortitude and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
