The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Ted B. Herrod (MCSN: 222103), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while a member of the Second Battalion, Second Marines, Reinforced during action against enemy Japanese forces at Tulagi, Solomon Islands on August 9, 1942. Unhesitating and with inspiring fearlessness, Corporal Herrod led his squad up to high ground on Mbangai Island in the face of heavy and accurate fire from enemy snipers. Upon reaching the crest of the hill, he boldly cleared a house of possible enemy snipers by expert use of hand grenades. Largely as a result of his undaunted courage and prompt actions the mission of his platoon was successful.
