The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Lynwood L. Herring (MCSN: 564616), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Bazooka Operator of Company B, First Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on March 11, 1945. When sudden hostile attack wounded Private First Class Herrin and two other men who were in a large shell hole being used as the platoon command post, the enemy took advantage of the momentary confusion and pressing forward, hurled a barrage of hand grenades, two of which fell in rapid succession near Private First Class Herring. Although suffering the severe pain of his wounds and in a prone position while undergoing medic treatment, he seized both grenades as they fell and hurled them back towards the enemy. By his cool action, he save the occupants of the shell hole from sustaining injury and prevented the two casualties from receiving further wounds. Private First Class Herring’s courage and quick thinking were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
