Promptly analyzing the critical situation upon landing on the beach Captain Herbold immediately reorganized scattered personnel into effecting fighting groups to reinforce the thinly held lines and, organizing remnants of headquarters, artillery and shore party units later that night, successfully defended a vital sector of the beachhead.
