The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant Rolfe H. Hepburn (MCSN: 0-28423), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Assistant Intelligence Officer of the Twenty-Third Marines, FOURTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands from 15 to 17 June 1944. Courageous and determined in the face of terrific fire from Japanese guns during landing operations on Saipan Island, Second Lieutenant Hepburn although seriously injured in a vehicle accident on the heights of Fina Susu, continued to give information of the enemy and to guide support fire until mortally wounded on 17 June 1944. By his outstanding professional skill and unwavering devotion to duty, Second Lieutenant Hepburn rendered invaluable service toward the success of the vital campaign on this strategically important island. His gallant conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Service.
