The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Jack A. Henopp (MCSN: 375804), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Fire Team Leader of Company C, First Battalion, Twenty-ninth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands on 10 April 1945. After two rifle companies were subjected to heavy hostile artillery and small arms fire and requested that additional ammunition be sent forward, Private First Class Henopp voluntarily took charge of a detail of thirty men and organized them as ammunition bearers. When an enemy machine gun opened fire and pinned down the carrying party while en route to the besieged companies, he used his men as a base of fire and, voluntarily moving forward, destroyed the hostile gun, thereby permitting the party to continue. Again crawling forward when another enemy machine gun opened fire and wounded one of the men, Private First Class Henopp dragged his wounded comrade to safety and, after the second machine gun had been silenced reorganized this party and successfully delivered the urgently needed ammunition. His inspiring leadership, indomitable fighting spirit and courageous devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
