The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Charles A. Henninger (MCSN: 295715), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the FIRST Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces on Cape Gloucester, New Britain Island on January 9, 1944. Advancing over difficult and unfamiliar terrain in the vicinity of a steep and well-defended hill, Sergeant Henninger constantly exposed himself to devastating hostile fire in a valiant attempt to maintain contact with the unit on his company’s right flank. Again risking his life when the platoon leader was wounded, he courageously assumed command and pressed the attack until a relief officer could be substituted. Sergeant Henninger’s inspiring leadership, indomitable fighting spirit and conscientious devotion to duty in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
