The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Thomas Jesse Heltzel (MCSN: 356170), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Crew Chief of the Second amphibian Tractor Battalion, Fifth Amphibious Corps, Fleet Marine Force in action against enemy Japanese forces on the Solomon Islands, Gilbert Islands and Marianas Group from 7 August 1942 to 15 June 1944. Courageous and aggressive in the face of terrific fire from Japanese guns, Corporal Heltzel rendered valuable service during the invasion and occupation of the Solomon and Gilbert Islands. Although mortally wounded during the first wave of the assault on Saipan Island, Corporal Heltzel, by his outstanding efficiency and dauntless fighting spirit had inspired the members of his crew to carry on unwaveringly to the completion of their mission. His exemplary conduct and splendid devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
