The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Robert C. Hauck (MCSN: 450227), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Acting Squad Leader in a Rifle Platoon Company I, Third Battalion, Eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands on 19 June 1945. Courageously leading his squad against a strategic Japanese position heavily fortified by automatic weapons and riflemen, Corporal Hauck and his men were suddenly pinned down with the platoon under a terrific concentration of hostile machine gun and small arms fire. Undaunted by the enemy’s fierce resistance, he voluntarily crawled forward to an exposed position and opened fire upon the hostile emplacement, drawing the enemy’s fire to himself and thereby enabling his platoon to withdraw to a position of safety. Mortally wounded in his valiant attempt, Corporal Hauck, by his courage and unwavering devotion to duty had upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
