The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Murray L. Hagler (MCSN: 436473), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Runner serving with the Second Battalion, Twenty-first Marines, THIRD Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on the Asan-Adelup Beachhead, Guam, Mariana Islands from 25 to 27 July 1944. Volunteering to deliver a message to an attached unit on the right flank of the company lines approximately 300 yards from the command post, Private First Class Hagler courageously crawled through an exposed area in the face of terrific enemy rifle and grenade fire to carry out his vital mission. When his company was temporally halted during bitter hostilities on 27 July, Private First Class Hagler was mortally wounded by enemy fire while making a valiant attempt to capture a Japanese officer who had infiltrated the company lines. His daring initiative, indomitable fighting spirit and unwavering devotion to duty throughout where in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
