The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Glynn H. Gutzeit (MCSN: 531995), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Gun Crewman of Battery F, Second Battalion, Fifteenth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 13 April, 1945. When severe enemy mortar fire ignited ammunition dumps, set fire to the command post and put several howitzers out of action, Private First Class Gutzeit voluntarily assisted in the displacement off guns and in the evacuation of the wounded. Although burned and shocked by exploding ammunition, he continued to work until he collapsed and was evacuated. His initiative and courage in the face of hostile mortar fire and exploding ammunition reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Gutzeit and the United States Naval Service.
