The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Stanley E. Guild (MCSN: 455583), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a 37-mm. Antitank Gun Sector Leader, serving with Weapons Company, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 11 May 1945. Undeterred by the fanatic opposition encountered while moving up a steep, shell-pocked hill, Sergeant Guild unhesitatingly led his section through intense enemy mortar and automatic weapons fire to augment his company’s firepower by bringing his heavier guns to bear on the stubbornly resisting Japanese securely entrenched in caves and other strong points. With utter disregard for his own personal safety he exposed himself repeatedly to supervise the rapid construction of three gun emplacements, and then, moving from gun to gun, directed devastating fire which quickly neutralized several caves and other hostile fortifications. Sergeant Guild’s heroic initiative and unflagging devotion to duty were vital factors in his company’s successful assault and reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
