The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Albert Guerrero (MCSN: 562290), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company C, First Battalion, Twenty-seventh Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 28 February 1945. During an attack along the beach in the northwestern sector of the island, Private Guerrero’s company was pinned down by intense hostile machine-gun, rifle and mortar fire which inflicted heavy casualties. The Japanese, strongly entrenched along the beach, held the high ground on the company’s right flank and the situation necessitated the use of tanks to aid his company in its attack. After the tanks arrived, Private Guerrero volunteered to guide the vehicles to a position from which they could fire on the enemy and, despite the extreme danger involved while exposed to heavy enemy mortar fire, boldly proceeded alone to an area in front of the tanks and skillfully directed their fire on the hostile emplacements, thereby aiding greatly in their destruction. By his cool and heroic action, he contributed materially to the success of his company in continuing the attack, and his aggressive fighting spirit and initiative reflect the highest credit upon Private Guerrero and the United States Naval Service.
