The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Corporal Donald E. Guard (MCSN: 545613), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company H, Second Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 13 June 1951. During an attack by Company H on Hill 787, Corporal Guard, chief of a machine gun squad, repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire to observe and direct the fire of his squad. Although painfully wounded early in the attack, he refused evacuation, and remained with his men, pointing out targets and searching for the most advantageous positions for his machine guns. He then moved his squad to a small hill offering an excellent field of fire on the enemy positions. Due to the skillful leadership of Corporal Guard, his squad inflicted numerous casualties on the enemy, and aided greatly in the complete disorganization and routing of the enemy force. The gallantry and devotion to duty displayed by Corporal Guard on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
