The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Bruce B. Grissom (MCSN: 364839), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 20 June 1944. Fighting gallantly in the face of tremendous odds during an attack against Hill 500, Private First Class Grissom located a heavily-fortified Japanese cave at the base of the ridge and, despite a serious wound in his right eye, boldly charged the emplacement, killed the occupants and completely destroyed the position. By his daring initiative, dauntless courage and unwavering perseverance at great risk to his life, Private First Class Grissom contributed essentially to the success of our forces in capturing this vital hostile stronghold and his valiant devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
