The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Calvin E. Griggers (MCSN: 443423), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Second Battalion, Twenty-First Marines, THIRD Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on the Asan-Adelup Beachhead, Guam, Mariana Islands, on 21 -22 July 1944. With his rifle platoon advancing in an attack against a ridge above the high vertical cliff on 21 July, Private First Class Griggers fearlessly climbed over the top of the cliff despite the fact that the scout immediately in front of him had been killed by hostile shellfire and, delivering withering fire against the enemy position threatening the advance of his platoon, enabled them to press forward and seize the vital terrain. Continuing his same bold tactics the following day, he was mortally wounded while courageously exposing himself to direct enemy artillery fire in a valiant attempt to carry out his hazardous mission. By his daring initiative , indomitable fighting spirit and great personal valor, Private First Class Griggers contributed immeasurably to the success of our forces in recapturing this important Japanese stronghold, and his tenacious devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
