The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Robert K. Griffin (MCSN: 344275), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while a member of the First Battalion, FIRST Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, between 16 August and 12 September 1942. When fires started in munitions and gasoline dumps, Private Griffin, unhesitatingly and with utter disregard of flying shell fragments from exploding ammunition, assisted in fighting and controlling the fires in the face of sustained enemy assault. His cool and courageous action in a critical situation was instrumental in reducing to a minimum the damage inflicted by enemy bombs and naval shellfire, and in saving many lives and much valuable equipment.
