The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John R. Greene, Jr. (MCSN: 467588), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving in a Forward Observation Section of Battery G, Third Battalion, Fourteenth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, from 15 June to 6 July 1944. Boldly taking over his duties when the scout observer of his section had been evacuated as a casualty, Private First Class Greene advanced forward of the front lines in order to cover the forward observer who was conducting a fire mission, killing two enemy snipers and neutralizing others until the mission was completed. On 23 June, he assisted in organizing a skirmish line to cover the exposed flank of an infantry battalion withdrawing under heavy fire. While under intense hostile rifle and machine-gun fire on 5 an 6 July, he directed artillery fire on enemy troop concentrations. His complete disregard for his own safety, superb determination and unwavering devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Greene and the United States Naval Service.
