The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Michael V. Greco (MCSN: 331313), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company E, Second Battalion, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, on 20 November 1943. Fighting furiously against fierce Japanese resistance immediately after landing on D-Day, Sergeant Greco expertly directed the effective mortar fire of his platoon against heavily-fortified Japanese emplacements and, in addition, organized strong rifle positions to hold the established beachhead line until reinforcements arrived. Promptly assuming command of his entire company when the officers became casualties, he calmly and efficiently directed his intrepid men throughout numerous brilliantly executed attacks, contributing essentially to the success of his unit in establishing a firm foothold during the first day of action for further sustained operations against this strategic island. His daring initiative, forceful and inspiring leadership and valiant devotion to duty in the face of great peril reflect the highest credit upon Sergeant Greco and the United States Naval Service.
