The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Harold R. Gray (MCSN: 344061), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Battalion, Twenty-First Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Asan-Adelup Beachhead, Guam, Mariana Islands, 28 July 1944. During an attack by his rifle company against fierce enemy opposition, Private First Class Gray voluntarily climbed onto tanks on four separate occasions to direct fire against definitely located hostile positions. In one instance, he boldly climbed up and tapped on the pistol port to communicate with the crew and skillfully directed its fire, thereby aiding in the neutralization of a hostile machine gun. His aggressive determination and gallant fighting spirit reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
