The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Leo P. Graveline (MCSN: 505744), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Member of a Wire Team serving with the Fourteenth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan Island, Mariana Islands, 15 June 1944. Courageous and aggressive in the face of terrific fire from Japanese guns, Private First Class Graveline rendered valiant service during initial landing operations on this strategically important island. Under intense enemy artillery and mortar fire, he assisted his wire team in finding and repairing a break in the telephone lines used for sending fire commands between artillery regimental headquarters and one of the battalions, thereby contributing materially to the ultimate success of this vital campaign pointing toward further victories over the Japanese. His heroic spirit and outstanding technical skill reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Graveline and the United States Naval Service.
