The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Earl D. Grant (MCSN: 507107), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as an Ambulance Driver of Company B, Fourth Medical Battalion, FOURTH Marine Division, during operations against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 28 June 1944. While making a trip to the front lines to evacuate casualties, Private Grant observed a wounded man lying in an unprotected area forward of the front lines and, on his own initiative, procured a stretcher from his vehicle and carried it to the side of the casualty. While attempting to evacuate the wounded man, he was himself critically wounded by hostile rifle fire. His coolness under fire and courage reflect the highest credit on Private Grant and the United States Naval Service.
