The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Richard P. Granier, Sr. (MCSN: 961984), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a member of Company C, Twenty-First Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 9 March 1945. Volunteering to go to the aid of two Marines who had been seriously wounded by an enemy land mine, Private Granier dashed across one hundred fifty yards of open terrain in the face of heavy machine gun and rifle fire and succeeded in bringing one of the men back to the safety of the lines, thereby saving his comrade’s life. His heroic concern for the welfare of another at the risk of his own life was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
