The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Clifford C. Gramer (MCSN: 0-23546), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Engineering Officer of Company B, Sixth Engineer Battalion, SIXTH Marine Division, during operations against Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 4 June 1945. Executing his mission under a torrential downpour, First Lieutenant Gramer courageously led his men under heavy enemy rocket, machine gun and cannon fire to complete the construction of a Bailey bridge linking Naha to Ona Yama Island in accordance with operational plans to take high-ground positions beyond the site. Despite casualties and the loss of military vehicles through enemy action during this operation, he succeeded in providing a vital supply and evacuation route for assault regiments, thereby contributing materially to the success of our forces in this area. His exemplary leadership and inspiring devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
