The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Jack Graham (MCSN: 303899), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Platoon Guide of Company F, Second Battalion, Twenty-seventh Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 24 February 1945. When his company was pinned down and halted by heavy enemy mortar and small-arms fire, Sergeant Graham guided three supporting tanks ahead of the lines and into position to fire on the enemy. Maneuvering through heavy cross-fire, he enabled the tanks to complete their mission thereby permitting his company to advance. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Sergeant Graham and the United States Naval Service.
