The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class James J. Grady (MCSN: 452962), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous Gallantry and intrepidity as a Wireman serving with the Third Battalion, Twenty-fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 18 June 1944 and 8 July 1944. Although wounded and suffering from shock as a result of an explosion of an enemy ammunition dump, Private First Class Grady steadfastly refused to be evacuated and unselfishly aided in the removal of casualties, later insisting upon standing his regular watch. On 8 July, during the fierce, bitter fighting at Marpi Point, he succeeded in maintaining effective telephone communications between an observation post and his platoon despite intense enemy fire and the movement of friendly tanks which repeatedly cut the lines. Private First Class Grady’s indomitable courage and tenacious devotion to duty in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
